Some Beautiful things for the wedding

Though I've been organized about lining up vendors, I've been less successful trying to visualize our actual wedding and have yet to think about colors. With a little help from The Inspired Bride, I'm hoping that I will become inspired.
In this color scheme, I really love the pop of orange and the emphasis on the fall season. When I think of fall, I think of deep aubergines, rust, baby blue and other reds, yellows and leaf yellows, and I think that color scheme represents all of these elements in a subtle yet sophisticated way.

In addition to etsy, I also recently was enlightened about a site called Wedzu - "the etsy of wedding things." What I love about Wedzu is that it separates wedding elements into different categories, such as "accessories," "Ceremony & Reception" and various other categories in order to make browsing more accessible. So much fun.

We have a date...a dress ...a venue..... and now we need "save the dates." I'm trying to figure out if I want to design them myself (and the invitations) and figure out the printing somehow....or just outsource it all (since I already have a somewhat busy life) - but either way....started to look at some pretty typefaces, just in case I find the time! :)

I really am loving Brownstone. It has a whimsy that is just delightful and is both geometric and legible with some pretty ornate elements.

Phaeton just makes my heart sing - it feels like an old medicine show meets Tim burton. There is something about it that just feels so me.

Businessman Penmanship, also designed by Umbrella type, is an ode to 1800's script business penmanship - so it feels fluid and authentic while also looking really poetic and quirky.

Mary Read is a modern handwritten typeface inspired by the wind and the sea. Harsh curves are combined with graceful swashes. It feels funky and modern and also lavish at the same time.

I just love Nelly Script. It is the font for Lovely Bridal in NY and I see it used a lot on wedding invitations, boards and the sort. I love that is maintains the calligraphic feel of thicks, thins and bumps while also just being breathtaking.

So my sister today asked me about a registry - I told her that I hadn't even chosen a date yet for our wedding let alone thought about what we need... but then she got me thinking about all the lovely things that I would want and my list is already growing

Anyhow - if anyone wants to surprise me with an unbirthday gift - or surprise us with an engagement gift that is one of the following things, I would be more than thrilled!

We don't currently have the space for a grill - not that our fire alarms would allow for us to have a grill pan...but a good old cast iron grill pan will be nice for when we move to a place where the smoke detectors don't go off all the time (which will be soon) - this one is a Lodge

My mom bought me Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution cook book and all the soups call for an immersion blender...so that would be nice - since a regular blender (or at least the one we have) isn't cutting it!

This would make my life so much easier when I want to eat carrots in my salad.

I love these plates that they have right now at Anthropologie - I just love the nautical themes and the Kraken (or as I discovered today from the Sketches of Creation by Alexander Winchell the cuttlefish - see page 112)

Jonathan Adler is amazing and very creative - his whimsical platters, salt and pepper shakers and other kitchen accoutrement make me very happy.

So the wedding planning has begun - well...I've started to do research. But there are so many good ideas and interesting ways to go it is pretty overwhelming. Something I have been researching a little is wedding designers.

A wedding designer has a different role from a wedding coordinator or a wedding planner, though it seems that her role will merge a little with both the coordinator and the planner in that it is her job to make your wedding beautiful - so I would assume that include vendor coordination and wedding day set-up.

Two of the prominent Atlanta wedding designers I've been looking at are:

Joy Thigpen, Ashley Meaders - I've seen both of their weddings on Oh Joy! and Once Wed

In addition to wedding designers there are the planners and the coordinators.

A wedding planner is a seasoned professional who can confidently guide you through the entire wedding planning process. From engagement to the grand exit, they are your experienced guides in the world of all things wedding! They help you plot the course down the aisle and are there to answer questions all along the way. Often a wedding planner will also have a hand in event design. They will proffer ideas and inspiration for the “look and feel” of your event and help you secure vendors who will contribute to that cohesive vision.

A wedding coordinator, by contrast, is not necessarily deeply involved with the wedding plans. Their primary function is to facilitate a smooth-running event on the wedding day itself. They often jump into the picture a month or so before the wedding to gather key information and create a timeline. They may help you iron out final details and contact your vendors to confirm contract obligations. On the day-of, they run the show and ensure that things go according to plan.

I have a feeling I'm going to need a wedding coordinator - but...first we need a date and venue!

I was doing some identity browsing today - as I like to do - and came across the following work from The Official Mfg. Co. aka OMFGco out in Portland, OR. Their work is cute, trendy and fun. But I noticed that their branding for Olympic Provisions very closely matched work I've previously blogged about by ptarmak for The Chop Shop.

Not only do the brands look similar, the photography is and style of showing work is similar too. Now, I know that copying is the greatest form of flattery - but this might be going a little closer to plagiarism - although in the world of the internet, I don't know which came first - the chop shop or olympic provisions.

I'm wondering if I want to invest in the 2009 Feltron Annual Report. Nicholas Feltron is a designer and organizer based in NY. He is a master of mapping data and creating really interesting, dynamic and organized infographics for clients such as Wired, Real Simple Magazine, Time Magazine and CNN.com. He also is one of the men in charge of Daytum.com - a website for collecting personal data. He is in SVA's interactive department.

Beautiful identity work from Graphic ExchanG E from a company called MyORangeBox. MyORangeBox (or MyORB) is Lucie Kim's art/design company located in NYC. She describes her work as "curious, intriguing and playful" - I like the sound of that. Lucie currently teaches at SVA and is a full time designer. I really love the website, it is "curious, intriguing and playful", as is her work.

While researching today, I came across work from Rubber Design - A flexible firm (cute little tagline). They are a fairly new firm - started in 2001 - but their work is cute, graphic and succinct. So, Anthony Bourdain is going to Praha on Monday's "No Reservations," which got me remembering about my own adventures in Prague back in 2004, when beer was cheaper than water, and $1 was 30 Czech Korunas. In the spirit of the Czech Republic, and my months of traveling afterward, I've been looking at travel inspired designs, including the work of Ketchup Mustard aka Jaime Van Wart. She's very young, and among the wave of young designers who are excelling at customized typography.

I also recently stumbled upon the design of the Italian company Undesign who does a lot of identity work out of Turino. I appreciate the amount of detail they put online to show the extent of their branding campaigns.

I also came across the work of the young designer beau monroe who has an array of nicely put together brand books. And a sweet little indexhibit website.

And just for a sweet little upcoming Valentine's exercise - Martha has some cute crafty ideas.

I know that this has been around for a while now - but when I was at the liquor store the other day, I actually saw this bottle and my love for the kitschy, stylized and beautifully-designed packaging just came back - so I wanted to share.

I'd been looking for a good sea monster for a while - I always joke that if I were to get tattoos, they would all be nautical themed (ships, mermaids and sea creatures) and I've always been fond of my dover clip art books and taschen images. I was watching Walk the Line when the SouthLAnds commercial came on with the most magnificent song. Did some research - Johnny Cash's version of "run on" or "God's gonna cut you down" - a traditional folk song, typically played with more lively rifs. But since I am more melancholic than chipper, I prefer the Johnny Cash version - you tell me which you prefer.

So what do you think of the use of Neutraface for Wendy's? Or Archer for Aflac and Well's Fargo? Is that taking a good thing and beating it to death like Helvetica, or even Papyrus (in the days that it was a new font) or is it a representation that people are starting to notice and value good type? When does a good thing turn sour with respect to typefaces and fonts - is it overuse or misuse and where does one draw the line?

while flipping through my blogs today I came across Boarding Pass/Fail which is a personal project for designer Tyler Thompson to redesign the boarding pass so that it is less confusing, more straight forward and prettier (as is always a goal for the designer).

I found this initiative very interesting because I fly all the time, and when I was at the AIGA memphis conference I attended a very similar presentation by David Gibson of Two Twelve about issues with USPS's "sorry we missed you" form - and how confusing and terribly put together that is. Design in the public sphere is sadly overlooked making everyday things - such as post office slips and boarding passes - difficult to understand and decipher. Form and function people...form and function.... and that's exactly what Tyler Thompson's newly designed boarding passes are attempting to do.

Similarly, his buddy Dustin Curtis took a stab at redesigning the American Airlines homepage to make that more understandable too... see here.

If you are having difficulty coming up with some New Years Resolutions, Monina Velarde's website will give you a few ideas. And I think that the website is pretty - simple, mustard yellow with cute type.

Found new work by design firm Parliament of Owls:

Alexander Girard...plus some

a mini bio of Alexander Girard (1907-1995) from Design Within Reach:
"Art is only art when it is synonymous with living."

There are two certitudes commonly assigned to mid-century designer Alexander Girard: He was the least well-known of the great designers at Herman Miller in the 1950s and 1960s, and he was the greatest colorist and textile designer of modern time. Although seemingly contradictory, both statements are accurate and are a reflection of Girard and the time period in which he worked. During his career, Girard energized the furniture designs of his Herman Miller colleagues with a new, vibrant color palette and an oeuvre of folk-inspired textiles. He was the first modern designer to define textiles as being more than just functional and to further emphasize form through the application of color and pattern.

Born in 1907 in New York City to an American mother and an Italian father, Girard and his family moved back to Italy shortly after his birth. Raised in Florence, Italy, Girard was educated as an architect at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London. In 1932, Girard returned to the United States and opened his first design office in New York City. Five years later, he moved again, to Detroit, where he opened a second studio. His first career breakthrough came in 1949, when he was chosen to design the Detroit Institute of Arts. For Modern Living exhibition, which focused on the design of common items and included the first public display of Charles and Ray Eames's molded plywood chairs. In 1952, Charles Eames recruited Girard to become Herman Miller's director of design for the company's textile division. Girard's tenure at Herman Miller continued into the 1970s and resulted in more than 300 vibrantly hued fabric and wallpaper designs.

The Webble! It's a footrest that gives you "360 degree movement," which would be really great for me at work considering I am sitting for about 7-8 hours a day. I know its sounds super nerdy, but my lower back and ass are telling me that a little leg movement would be a great thing.

A book of 826 National's designed wares. I'm a huge supporter of 826 and have blogged about them numerous times. In Michigan, I was just a fan because I loved what the organization was doing with creative writing for children...now, as a designer, I am inspired by the random and silly creations that are designed and created both for and by 826. I've realized, now that I am working 8-6 (or as you can see, 8-7!) that I don't really have enough time to ponder or create a full blog unless I do it when I go home (I don't even touch the computer once I am home though). So, instead, I thought it might be nice to at least have a fast rundown of all the fun things I ran across while I was researching, considering, thinking, or eating lunch.

When researching about creating a holiday card for a client I came across this fun site for wooden printed goods some of which were very cute

also found a neat illustrator trick for making wood textures

then I ran across there very fun and quirky illustrations for Wayne Pate while reading a cute little blog called Modern Craft. Modern Craft has a whole bunch of beautifully hand done illustrations and designs and a whole bunch of give aways....anywho, Wayne Pate's posters embody the cool retro aesthetic always gets our attention and are a bit reminiscent of Lyle Lyle Crocodile, Alexander Girard, and a little David Hockney.

I also ran across this beautiful piece of art on Grain Edit which is for Mike Cina's jazz mix. Mike Cina works with YouWorkForThem.

then I found another fun blog Black*Eiffel...which I recommend checking out for anyone who likes a little design and lifestyle.

Maurice L. Freedman

I ran across Maurice L Freedman's work today while doing research at work at ButDoesItFloat and was amazed by his work and the nature of his work.

Maurice L Freedman was the district camoufleur in Florida during World War I. During the First and the Second World Wars, many ships were camouflaged with Dazzle Patterns. This was true for both the Merchant Navy as well as for the Military Navy. Vessels from both the UK and the US were camouflaged. Dazzle is a disruptive type of camouflage used in World War I to camouflage ships against German U-boats. The disruptive design resembled Cubist paintings and confused German U-boats on the speed and direction of a ship.

The top-secret nature of camouflage during World War I has made Dazzle one of history's hidden gems - and what beautiful gems indeed.

Maurice Freedman later went on to graduate from RISD - there was a recent symposium about his work.

Georges Barbier

I remember the first time I stumbled upon this image, I was so in love with her that I created an inspiration folder just to keep her on my desktop...that was about 4 years ago, before I had entered design or art.

I have always been a collector, and she was the beginning of a quest to figure out her origin. Today I discovered it. This is the cover illustration for the second edition of a french novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, written by Pierre Ambroise Francois Choderlos de Laclos. The original epistolary novel was written back in 1782, just before the French Revolution. Although he was an army general throughout Louis XIV's campaigns, this novel has been likened to those of the Marquis de Sade due to the main characters' use of sex as a vehicle for humiliation.

Almost 125 years after Choderlos de Laclos's bones were thrown into the sea by the Italians who had reclaimed the concurred land from the French Revolution, Les Liaisons Dangereuses was republished with illustrations by Georges Barbier, giving Choderlos de Laclos the posthumous fame he had always desired.

Georges Barbier's illustrated everything from play and poster illustrations, to haute couture design. I found a little autobiography here and here. His depiction of the woman was very iconic to the 1920's, with thin androgynous bodies and beautiful details. His work just screams art deco to me, and I love it.

You can see how work like this inspired artists such as Tomer Hanuka whom I also love.

It has been a long time since I've posted anything...but I have very recently graduated from The Portfolio Center, and I think it is time to start keeping track of all the inspirational websites, artists and activities that I will be doing while I job search.

First off, came a huge blog reading fiasco. I subscribe all of my blogs to Google Reader, but once in a while I would like to look at new designers or people who do as I do, and read other blogs for inspiration, and then blog about it!!

So I discovered design work life. Design work life is the blog of Seamless Creative which is kept to catalog design inspiration. Seamless Creative is a nice little two person boutique design firm in Queens that does really beautiful but simple work for print and web. Their work has a lot of pattern and simple illustrations, with beautiful choice of color and type.

I think I will keep up on them, especially since they make such simple work look very delicate and polished.

Bing.com is Microsoft's response to Google and it is running on a pretty strong platform - "Not just a search engine, but a decision engine." Basically, Bing.com is trying to fix internet searching to provide results that are appropriate to the original search (because Google will retrieve the most random results at times.)

Google has also been chastised for not being the most user friendly or aesthetically pleasing website, having been developed before web design and hierarchy were as important as they are now, but unwilling to change their aesthetic and get all their users in an uproar.

So with all these possible improvements that Bing.com could implement, does it live up to our expectations? I thought I would check it out.

I was not satisfied with the results that I found, especially in the image search. The options for looking for varying sizes is a lot more limited than Google (a huge issue for me as I am searching for images that can blow up to print quality). I also don't like the categories that were created for "easier searches." I realize that while those may be the most popular categories, there are more than a few important categories missing - are we really only news, travel and shopping?

Although I have a problem with the functionality of the site, I have to say, it is very pretty. I love the option of having larger thumbnails in the image search. And the inclusion of sections and hierarchy on the search homepages - but does the site work if it is just pretty and not really functioning in a new and better way than Google? Overall, I have to say that I think I will continue to use Google - who needs design, when all I am looking for are results?

Remembering Michael

People used to go out and buy newspapers on days of special events. For example, I tried to buy a NYTimes when Obama was elected as our President, but they were sold out everywhere. (Now you can buy one on ebay!!!)

When MJ recently passed away - I figured the same thing would happen. So I decided to do the next best thing - screenshots of the NYTimes homepage. But does this equate or was I just lazy? The interesting thing about online media is that is updates itself so quickly and frequently, that it is the best source for current updated information anyhow. Also, within the first 24 hours, there were more photographs on the NYTimes homepage than I think they had published in their newspaper - so which version is more valuable? On ebay, MJ's paper is more expensive that Obama's. But I got a screenshot of the first NYTimes story.

NYTimes Advertisement & Tufte

Lately, advertisers have been trying to create innovative ways to engage audiences in their web banners. We see that with Pandora, the entire surrounding web space turns into advertiser art as campaigns becomes oftentimes interactive and interesting in an obtrusive but friendly way. The New York Times has also been a member of this group - creating web banners that break the boundaries of their boxes and spill out onto the page. As much as we don't like to be told what to like and what not to like, I've actually been taken in by some of these approaches - especially when done well and when the advertisers are contextually relevant (as my friend Aymar writes).

But today I encountered the counter opposite of the now expected glitzy, complex and overwhelming web add. Edward Tufte, a man who I highly respect and whose books I own, is having a National Tour about information and data presentation. I discovered this via an advertisement on the NYTimes homepage - an advertisement that resembled newspaper ads from the turn of the century (20th Century).

I frankly enjoy the very straight forwards typographical approach - I also found the advertisement extremely striking. The typography, while not too interesting (centered and kerned out a little), is very elegant. And despite there being a lot of information in the ad, I did not find it overwhelming. To see such a shift in a major advertisers methodology towards a very graphical, conservative and yet modern approach (in its minimalism), and, also shifting focus from being catchy to focusing on information and type, is very interesting. It makes me wonder if advertisers are going to start giving us some credit and not necessarily treat people like we need flashing lights and dumbed-down messaging in order to understand content.

Kudos NYTimes and Edward Tufte - keep it up!

Font vs typeface

Today I had a discussion with a guy who works making professional signage - when I say make, I mean design and execution. He said he gets a project, gets ideas from the client, and then creates appropriate wayfinding signs in order to make the client happy. He was telling me all about how his day will differ between working on the computer and designing the sign, to welding and putting the sign together.

Then I asked him, does he happen to create signs with a specific typeface most frequently. And he just looked at me with a blank stare. So I said again,"What is your favorite typeface, you know, for your signs?" Again a blank stare. I tried again, this time just saying type and simplifying the sentence. Still nothing. So then I changed my language - "Do you use a lot of different fonts?" bingo.

"Oh yea, all the time, we get discs of fonts. I have to font match a lot, you know...recognize what font something is..."

This is where he lost me. From what I recall, working on a PC, there are 3 typefaces - or fonts: Times New Roman, Courier, Arial. Fonts, as I know them, are type for the web, faces that aren't loved by designers, or not created by type bureaus (although there are type bureaus called fontfont, thefontshop etc.) Which raises the question, just because he didn't know the word typeface, does that mean he doesn't know type? I didn't really ask any further, but this made me think about the communication rift that I've heard about between designers and everyone else.

And truly, what is the difference between a font and a typeface? Maybe AIGA knows or the Font Feed.

I understand the impetus behind the trend, but I think it has gotten a little out of hand, especially since the only initial difference between two completely different companies that have totally different purposes is one letter in a company name.

i stumbled upon the following site today and was utterly fascinated.

Roland Barthes says that a photograph is a referent to a moment that has past, and therefore is representative of a time that will never exist again - it has passed us by. But for the dead, does photography do the opposite, and immortalize their presence in a specific moment for all time?

I looked through these photographs and couldn't keep posing this question, because I was side tracked by the dead's skin and how is slips off the face like a loose glove.

Milk packaging

I'm doing a little research on milk packaging - because for some reason, I think it would be fun as a student project to try to package something that everyone buys.

People should design the staples just as much as the specialty items. Despite the fact that the Tropicana redesign was a debacle, I am still appreciative that they were considering a modern upgrade. And because orange juice is such a highly used item, the response to the redesign was amazing. That wouldn't have happened if it had been a lesser used product such as granola or a cereal box. I wonder what would have happened if it was Mott's apple juice! hm.

I have seen his work before, but somehow every time I am on ffffound.com or flickr.com I happen to stumble upon more of his work. I believe he is Atlanta based and it seems that he does a lot of layout and illustration design for Paste Magazine.

Scrabble Everyone

Scrabble Campaign...from Ogilvy Paris, trying to bring more kitch and fun into Scrabble in order to reach the Adult Swim audience (apparently). Actually, according to the brief, despite some resurgence of interest from a younger audience due to facebook and iphone apps, Scrabble is still considered an elitist game for an older audience. In order to revitalize the brand and peoples understanding of Scrabble, the company needs to help a younger audience rediscover the richness of words.

The whole point of the campaign is to show how words spawn different words to create a maze of language. This is visually portrayed in a "stream of consciousness" illustrative style.

Each spot is done by a different illustrator and produced at Wizz Motion Graphics studio

I was thinking about logos and packaging today when I went to the supermarket and realized that Tropicana completely reverted back to their older design-they didn't merge the two designs (the new and old.) It's amazing to me that a company would spend that much money, create a new print ad campaign, and not try to figure out a way to make the new design be more functional - what a waste of money.

I also noticed that Snapple underwent a facelift. I guess I am actually one year late, but surprised none the less.

As much as I want to write something for the upcoming Winterhouse competition, I don't think I will have the time (which saddens me greatly). Although this much is true, I was inspired to see that design writing is still encouraged, and even was supported in my school at one point. And when I am saying design writing, I don't mean copywriting in ads but art criticism and design theory - both of which are supposedly dying breeds (do to blogging, lack of knowledge of design history and a lack of emphasis on writing and communication in general).

There is a plug-in for Firefox too that makes tagging images pretty easy. I just joined and have only just begun exploring, but I like that I don't need to pull images onto my desktop anymore. Yanko design is a web magazine that compiles the newest advances in modern international design, mostly exhibiting exhibition design, industrial design, product design and new technology. Most designs are concept designs waiting to be picked up by larger industries. Set up like NotCot or It's Nice That, the actual website shows snap shots of designs before delving into multiple pictures and full explanations of products.

The New York Trilogy

I've finally begun doing stuff for my portfolio - yay. It only took my two weeks to get started. I am not really rolling yet, but I am thinking, which is the first step to rolling.

I started to do some more research concerning The New York Trilogy, being I really like the books and would like to redesign the covers I designed for Hank's class, since I pretty much did those all in one day! I remember having read a really helpful review on The Book Design Review about how The New York Trilogy is oftentimes pigeon-holed with images of the empire state building on the cover. Meanwhile the glory of The New York Trilogy is the psychology of the characters in their space. Design Observer's guest blogger wrote it best, "The urban unconscious is structured as language and pattern. Space is a character."

"Cities are accident machines, generators of random encounters with people, places, objects, and self. Life as lived or constructed builds a narrative route through this collusion of unexpected and familiar events."

Michael Sorkin, I think, is right on. Auster's work appears simple, but characters struggle and are faced with enigmatic consequences to their own existence. I'm revitalized to redesign my covers, and reinspired by some art.

STA Travel facelift?

STA Travel has gotten a new and trendy facelift. I noticed it today as I was entering their "30 Days of Free Travel" contest (although, I never win anything). The new logo marked the beginning of the contest, and the beginning of a more "playful" logo geared towards young travelers who are not looking for the traditional travel experience, or gothic typeface apparently.

As well intentioned as it seems, I am not terribly attracted to the new logo. I find it trendy and busy, following the "lets put something on its side" trend that many logos are doing (see below). I only hope that this helps them find the new cool vibe that they felt their old aesthetic was lacking. What do you think?

Did you know that these images were actually scientific images using technology that would later become the standard flash? I love when I discover little factoids like that.

These were photographs done by Harold Eugene Edgerton, a professor of electrical engineering at MIT back in the 1950's. He studied the multi-flash strobe light and helped develop technology for taking photographs under water.

Peter Grundy is currently the owner of a firm called Grundini, which focuses on the creation of information design that is tasteful, creative and visually pleasing. All of his characters and graphics are very simple, thereby allowing readers to gather information quickly and effectively while making information easy to understand. Infographics have the tendency to be either too extensive, with way too much information, or just plain old boring. But how can sex be boring when characters are dressed with plump round breasts and jovial smiles.

Passover begins on Wednesday evening, and like last year, I have taken it upon myself to have a goy seder - that is, of the 25 people invited, 4 are Jewish! But, I have to say, having non-Jews honoring and enjoying a good ol' Jewish holiday is almost better than the tradition seder in my opinion, and it gives me the option of having a less traditional dinner menu.

For instance, why eat gefilte fish when you can make these?

Stalin's Forgotten Zion

I recently stumbled across an article about a Yiddish resurgence in a city in Siberia called Birobidjan, otherwise known in the 1930s as a city within Stalin's Jewish Autonomous Oblast. Stalin established the region in 1934 to allow the Jews of the USSR to pursue "Yiddish cultural heritage within a socialist framework." The idea was to create a soviet zion, or an alternate Israel, within the Soviet State. But in Siberia? People were banished to Siberia to live in gulags and work in coal mines? Thanks Stalin!

Reading this made me think of Michael Chabon's rewritten history of the Jewish Homeland, which in his novel "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" is situated in Sitka, Alaska.

Maps and Legends Dust Jacket

Artist Jordan Crane designed this interestingly constructed dust jacket for the McSweeney's edition of Michael Chabon's compilation of stories, "Maps & Legends." I love that McSweeney's has the capacity as a small, but well-established, publisher to spend extra money and care on the design and execution of their novels. The first McSweeney's book I bought, "You Shall Know Our Velocity" was also interestingly printed, with the story actually beginning on the cover and on the inside fly sheet of the book:

The Crane Jacket consists of three belly-bands that whimsically wrap around the book in sections--oceans, jungle and flatlands. Crane is able to add little elements of interest throughout that make you want to peel off the dust jacket and see what is happening underneath. I would like to see the book in person, although I already have a long list of books I am in need of reading.

Once again, I experienced another wonderful Fringe experience, especially on a rainy night when all the movies in the theaters are not worth my time or money.

Aimed at young adults and families, Fringe makes classical chamber music more quotidian, intimate and tangible. The audience is not only able to actually see the musicians--and the sweat on their brows--but also can feel the music in the small environment, while sipping our affordable beer, wine and water. Fringe takes all the wonderful things about classical concerts and merges them with elements that make people comfortable--good company, laid-back environment and a lack of elitism of any sort.

Tonight was nothing less than wonderful. We had the opportunity to listen to another intense Shostakovich number with interesting and electrifying cello harmonics, and a lovely Mendelssohn trio filled with a dancingly playful piano suite.

This is the second time I've seen Shostakovich played at Fringe, and both times have been worth every second. The first time, we listened to String Quartet No. 8, and this time, Piano Trio No. 2.

I have to say that the price, the atmosphere and the company make this the best approach to classical chamber music ever. I have every intention on going again in May.

I was reading about Madoff - yuck - when I noticed on the bottom of my screen that there was a very cute little flash graphic going on advertising IBM.

I was interested - I clicked, and arrived at a really cute array of small flash movies promoting IBM's new interest in creating a "thinking world." Check out here

While the frame for the site is a little clunky and kinda off-putting, I was really delighted by the little iconic graphics that reminded me a bit of GOOD and perhaps a return to Paul Rand's IBM.

Banco Espirito Santo

Animated War films

I don't know if it is a trend, or if animation allows for more versatility in showing truth, but it seems that there have been a few animated war films lately; notably Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir.

I haven't seen either of them yet...but I would really like to.

I think it is an interesting idea to use animation for war films - it almost allows the director to show things that would be too gruesome or inappropriate in reality. Does this make it a heightened reality? When I was watching an interview with Ari Folman, Director for Waltz with Bashir he said something interesting. He wanted people who were watching to know that the film, although animated, is still about real people who really died and really were effected by the 1982 war with Lebanon.

So there seems to be a fine line between stylization and documentary in these films. I'm curious to know what I will think once I get the opportunity to not do homework, and see some films.

Blogging the Bible

As a lover of the Bible as literature, I found this project very interesting.

Apparently, I am not the only one who is fascinated by the stories in the Bible, not for any religious purposes, rather for the stories. The Bible is very interesting when representing the flaws and follies of man, and I find the humanity very realistic - vengeance, jealousy, loss, love, hate. They're all in there.

My real fascination of the Bible came from a book I read a few years ago, The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant-which is quoted in this article. It is a historical fiction novel elaborating the events of a very short biblical passage. It was beautiful and enlightening-the bible can be read with so many different tones of voices, connotations, words. Each translation changed the stories.

Anywho. If you are also fascinated by the idea of the Bible as literature, I suggest you taking a peak of this article and see how anyone can enjoy it.

EA games

I've never been much of a gamer myself. But today I stumbled across a motion graphics site that led me to the EA games website. As I was perusing the games, I realized how complicated the graphics were - and how everything had to feel like a specific game. I think I'm starting to have a change of heart and think of gaming not only as a "nerd" hobby, but as a designers playground.

I was looking at a game called Zubo for nintendo DS. And also looking at a game trailer for Dante's Inferno, which is the most elaborate trailer I think I've ever seen.

DAYTUM

I've jumped on the DAYTUM bandwagon.

For those of you who don't know what it is, Daytum is a site that compiles daily data. You can track and keep track of anything you do, consume, poop out, who knows.

There are multiple options for viewing, so you can sort your data into pie charts, x and y axis graphs, bar graphs, and counters.

It's an interesting way to monitor yourself in a very objective way - objective and visually stimulating.

The actually site is very minimal, and yet very striking. You can check out how many bowls of cereal I eat a day or my favorite movies to watch when I am designing here

Of course, if you want to be specific and keep track of your sex life, I wouldn't suggest DAYTUM - try Bedpost instead!!!!! (WHAT??) I read about it here and thought I had to see what that was about.

I used to think that Newsmap was a unique and interesting visual way to introduce heirarchy and chunking into the news on a broader scale.

And then msnbc introduced Spectra. Granted it is in beta and is a little (a lot) overwhelming, it also is able to create a neat 3 dimensional way to look at news using color to differentiate between subjects. Just read it here.

When you compare the two you find marumushi.com/newsmap to be clunky, dense and old - whereas Spectra is light, bouncy and CRAZY!!!

After spending one too many hours perusing The Daily Beast, both reading daily headlines and gawking at some sort of gothic typeface that I couldn't recognize (anyone have any idea? I'm down to Railroad Gothic, Industrial Gothic, Alternative Gothic or Gothic No. 13), I stumbled across a new site called Typesites. Typesites is a weekly showcase of websites with interesting typographic design. It's a fun website - and features some of my favorite visual websites (such as GOOD Magazine, Monocle Magazine, ilovetypography, The New Yorker) and has many I had never heard of.

So apparently the Pepsi internal document for the rebrand made its way onto the internet.

Just as a little background: last year Pepsi spent several hundred million dollars on a new logo.

To prepare for the rebrand, Arnell prepared the 27-page document, titled "BREATHTAKING Design Strategy," to prove that their idea for the new logo is a veritable Da Vinci Code of branding, drawing on everything from magnetic fields to the "Golden Ratio."

Artist questions police's timing of his arrest on graffiti charges - The Boston Globe

The recent arrest of Shepard Fairley asks an imporatant question: what is the difference between art and vandalism? and what is the price of fame?

Fairley had lived incognito for a while as he started tagging OBEY ten years ago. It looks like living as the anonymous tagger was safer than stardom. Although I've recognized and known Fairley's work for years, it was his recent Hope Obama poster that elevated him to celebrity status, and put him in Urban Outfitters and the Washington National Gallery.

I think Banksy has recently exposed himself too. Or rather the press is trying to expose him. Are these expositions a bad idea? I think so. Leave the artists alone and let them be our dark knights!!!

Just doing my usual browsing. Ran into this awesome artist. I am familiar with his work via a project I did on the Marquis de Sade. He illustrated the cover art to a Sade book. See below.

Anywho, his name is Tomer Hanuka...and he is an illustrator in NYC and teaches at SVA . I love his work. It is disturbing and interesting--and he seems to do a lot of work inspired by film. I also noticed that he had work in Juxtapoz (love).
He has a twin brother Asaf, who is also an awesome illustrator; the two work together. Check out Asaf's work too.
Tomer also has a blog where he shows his process of storyboarding his illustrations before he proceeds forward with them. It's really awesome to see an artist's process.

I wonder if I can visit SVA and meet him. That would be awesome. The more I think of it, the more I wish I went to SVA. They have an amazing staff of illustrators, designers and thinkers...artists whose blogs and articles I read...like Steven Heller, Louise Fili, Stefan Sagmeister, Ken Carbone, Milton Glaser, Michael Bierut...I should stop.
